Paint Brief - Research: Paint Sampling

Colours should be tested and sampled dependant on your intended usage for the colour. For example, if you are decorating a space used exclusively during the evening hours, you may wish to see the colour lit by table lamps or by candle light. It is important to consider not only the light quality of your space, but the times you use the space.
It is also important, if creating a colour scheme, to sample the colours together. This will highlight the colour relationships, and how they affect one another when side-by-side.
The paramount rule of sampling is to never paint directly on to the wall to be decorated. This is because the new colour will be directly affected by the existing colour you are planning to cover. Should you wish to sample several colours, each should be viewed in isolation. Remember, the perceived colour will change dependant on surrounding visual information.

It is recommended to sample colours on large sheets of paper which can be temporarily hung in your room in different areas. Additionally, remember the true colour value can only be achieved with two coats of the paint. Check your samples at different times throughout the day to ensure you experience the true colour in relation to your space and changing light conditions.
