Dan-Air Diaries: Brief

Background

British airline Dan-Air commenced operations in the United Kingdom in 1953 with a single aircraft, a Douglas DC-3 Dakota. It was from conception until the cessation of operations, a subsidiary of Davies and Newman, a ship broking company established in London in 1922, from whose initials the airline derived its name. The company was incorporated on 21 May 1953 as Dan Air Services Ltd. Dan-Air operated inclusive tour (IT) holiday charter flights, regional short-haul scheduled services, transatlantic and other worldwide affinity group/Advanced Booking Charters (ABC flights), oil industry support flights and ad-hoc operations including all-cargo services from London Gatwick, other British airports and Tegel Airport in West Berlin.

Julia Burton worked for the airline as an Air-Stewardess between 1984-1992, during which time the job was considerably different to the present day role.

Job Description

Design and produce a diary-style publication detailing the stories and experiences of Julia Burton, and other Dan-Air crew members, giving ‘behind the scenes’ in-sight into the airline, the lives of its staff and the day-to-day practices of the crew. The visual language of the book should be informed by the air-line identity, context and printed collateral from the 1950s —1990s during which time the airline operated. The tone of voice should be informative, light-hearted and personal.

Target audience

The target audience for this publication are those with an affiliation to the air-line, such as previous employees, or alternatively those with a knowledge of Dan-Air, who remember flying with the air-line or have an active interest in
commercial aviation.

Additionally, those who are a part of online community Dan-Air Remembered, a website dedicated to the air-line, sharing memories, and detailing its staff will be interested in the publication.

The age range of those working for Dan-Air during the 1980s - early 1990s will be more so interested in the book as a result of the content being from this time.

Deliverables

A diary-style publication detailing the Dan-Air related memoirs of Julia Burton.
