Paint Brief Development: Brand Name

I considered a range of names for the new interior paint brand, inspired by decoration, colour and paint. I also considered the use of surnames and combinations of surnames - an approach used by brands to establish a sense of heritage.

House of Colour - Representing both the house of the consumer as a colourful home and the brand being home to a range of colours paints.

Burton & Firth - Inspired by Farrow & Ball, this combination of family surnames evokes a sense of heritage, which aids the establishment of new brands via perceived historic value.

Waterhouse PaintsAnother family surname, this time in-part containing the word ‘house’ which may subtly reference the use of paint in the home.

House of TheobaldInspired by a previous Tutor’s surname, who happens to have a beautiful Georgian home,‘Theobald’ is a Germanic dithematic name, composed from the elements theod - ‘people’ and bald - ‘bold.’ This may be representative of the bold consumer using the brand’s paint within their home.

Spectrum - Representing the range of colours available from the paint brand.

Pigment PaintsSignifying the pigments used to make paint.

The name I am most drawn to, and notably with the support of those in critique, is House of Theobald.

This name not only has true context, but appropriately represents the boldness, or instilled confidence, people will have when supplied with the knowledge and utilities they need from this new brand of paint to transform their interior spaces at home.

Feedback received in critique noted that the name ‘Theobald’ was also unique and unusual, making for a more memorable brand. Additionally, it was also mentioned that the name sounded somewhat archaic, and therefore represented the potential period-style home specialism of the brand.
