OUGD505 - Leeds Public Spaces - Victoria Gate: Controversies and Negative Opinion

Although the A3 traditional print must be celebratory, I believe it is important to identify the negative aspects of the shopping centre too, as this will aid development of a more considered resolution.

  • Though the project was first announced in 2004, this  followed several cancelled schemes for the derelict site dating back as far as the 1970s.
  • The location on which Victoria Gate sits was in the past home to a very small China Town which has caused some controversy due to the required relocation of the occupiers of the present buildings.
  • There has also been some concern over the possible loss of old buildings which stand on the planned site of the development
  • It is the view of some that Victoria Gate is the first step in attempts to gentrify the surrounding areas of the city.
  • Some reactions have been surprisingly severe, with some visitors describing the look of the shopping centre it as ‘tacky’  and 'dangerously like the second coming of Dubai luxe.'
Considering the above negative views, it is all the more important to ensure the print communicates Victoria Gate positively as a celebration of Leeds' textile heritage.
