OUGD504 - Design for Print - Hardback Information, Consideration and Production

A  hardback book, also known as hardcover, hardbound or case-bound book, is one bound with rigid protective covers - typically of cardboard covered with buckram, book cloth, heavy paper, or in some instances leather. While hardback books are marginally more costly to manufacture, these types of book are much more durable than paperbacks with flexible, easily damaged paper covers.

In order for the publication to appeal to the high-class clientele of Bond Street and make for a desirable product in its own right, the book must appear strong, durable and well-made. The publication requires a hardcover in order to provide strength and rigidity to the long, thin pages representative of the street to protect them and provide structure to what would otherwise be a very flexible, yielding resolution.

Below shows the production elements and ordering of construction:

Using this construction ordering the Bond Street Brand Directory publications front and back hard-cover(s) were produced. Using previously selected stock and explored finishing methods, each element of the hardback cover comes together in creating a luxurious, strong and unyielding resolution that reinforces, supports and enhances not only target desirability but the publications content and contexts also.

See below for the final hard-back cover:
