OUGD405 - Critique

Having made significant design decisions concerning the typography and colours to be featured in the visual language of the Leeds City centre way finding system, I put my decisions into a critique. The questions and feedback are documented below:

I have selected Univers as the typeface through which typographic information will be communicated to residents and visitors of Leeds City centre. Do you believe this choice is appropriate and suitable for purpose?

  • Yes. Its clear, legibility is strong and its typical of an informative typeface.
  • Sans-serif is definitely the most appropriate to informative design.
  • I think Univers is used on signage in Switzerland, so its a good choice for signage.
  • It looks quite similar to the one used on road signage so will be cohesive with the rest of the navigational information of the city.

*After explaining my decided colour co-ordinations to different sectors of the city (see previous blog post)*

Would you all agree with these co-ordinations? Does anyone have any alternative suggestions?

  • Those are the colours I think I would have chose. Each has supporting characteristics that make them relevant to your sectors.
  • I think some road signs are green, and red is also associated with danger and yellow with hazards so you will have to choose specific colours that differ enough to break established connotations.
  • I would agree with the co-ordinations. Definitely choose alternative tones and shades though.
  • Maybe for the financial sector you could use purple, thats a colour associated with wealth and power as appropriate to that industry.

Points taken from Critique
  • Univers will effectively and suitably communicate typographic information on the way finding signage system.
  • Colour co-ordinations have successfully been chosen considerately, relevantly, and appropriately.
  • Consider colour purple for Financial Sector.
