OUGD405 - Colour Analysis and Consideration

This way finding system will ultimately rely upon co-ordinated colours to give the target environmental awareness within Leeds city centre. To ensure the system works effectively,
colours must first be matched to each of the 5 sectors. Before specific Pantone colours can
be chosen, below are the 5 sectors co-ordinated to what I believe are the most appropriate
hues (to be confirmed in critique).

Civic Sector - Red

A colour associated with energy, strength, power and love - this dynamic colour has been chosen as this sector lies at the heart of the city, predominantly on perhaps it's most significant street - The Headrow - spanning from the west, all the way to the east of Leeds. Home to the Town Hall, City Library, Art Gallery and Henry Moore institute to name only a few.

Shopping Sector - Yellow

The colour Yellow has long been associated with happiness, joy and energy. This makes it an appropriate choice in the representation of shopping - considered a leisurely activity often used as 'retail therapy' to lift the spirit of those in need. Shopping in Leeds couldn't be any easier with multiple main shopping streets, such as Briggate, and additions such as Trinity.

Financial Sector - Green

Green has been selected to represent Leeds' Financial sector as the colour is often denoted as a signifier of money, prosperity and growth (financial growth in this case). This sector also includes Park Square, one of Leeds' four significant green spaces within the city centre.

University Sector - Blue

A signifier of wisdom, confidence and intelligence - Blue has been selected to represent the University sector as a result of these traits being gained and achieved via attendance to these institutions. With three Universities present in the centre of Leeds, The University of Leeds, Leeds College of Art and Leeds Beckett, these characteristics are in abundance.

Eastgate Sector Orange

With the £130 million development of Victoria Gate in the Eastgate sector of the city, as well as long-standing gems including Kirkgate Market and the Corn Exchange, orange has been selected as this areas associated colour. Signifying creativity and success, these traits foreshadow the development and regeneration of this east sector of the city, as well as the established success of the famous market and hub of independent retailers (The Corn Exchange). A bold, energetic and stimulating colour representative of the sectors future.
