OUGD504 - Summer Brief - Concept and Research

In attempt to tailor my summer brief concept to allow me to take the brief in a luxury direction
having discovered through the first year of the course that this is where my passion within graphic design lies (in hand crafted, luxury pieces), I have selected the luxury retail sectors of London to be my location-specific setting for the photographic and copy content to be collected from to be featured within the publication.

Retail shops have long been an integral part of London's cityscape. The retail industry today contributes significantly to London's economy, with the sector accounting for around 40% of all money spent in London.

Many of the large retail stores have their outlets within central London. Oxford Street, Regent Street and New Bond Street are the main upmarket shopping areas - accommodating most of the big flagship stores. The city abounds in flagship retail stores of all types across a multitude of industries - from fashion to confectionary.

London provides an exclusive home to many of the major high-end fashion brands within their own stores as oppsed to mere concessions within larger department stores. These stores can be found primiarly along Bond Street, Regent Street, Oxford Street, Kings Road, Piccadilly and Knightsbridge.

These streets boast one of the biggest and best concentrations of designer shops in the world, including Prada, Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Nicole Fahri, Armani, Versace and Ralph Lauren.Quintessentially English’ style can be found at Mulberry and Burberry's flagship stores.

Bond Street, the most prestigious of the streets, plays host to the most acclaimed names in fashion, as well as Sotheby's auction house and for diamonds - Cartier, Tiffany and Asprey  jewellers are located on this exclusive, expensive street.

This initial concept for the publication is to showcase the plethora of type styles featured within the acclaimed luxury shopping streets and exclusive stores that celebrate the city’s heritage, diversity and leadership in the luxury and exclusive retail and fashion industries alike.

OUGD504 - Summer Brief - Brief Information & Interpretation

In preparation for OUGD504, Studio Brief 01, in which the task is to produce a publication that 'celebrates the richness and diversity of type as it is to a specific place,' over the summer it is a requirement to collect and organise photographic and copy content. The content, which is to be collated to feature within a publication entitled 'A-Z: Type in Context,' will consist of 26 photographs, one per each letter of the alphabet, alongside contextual information regarding the photographed type and its setting.

I anticipate the most difficult part of the project will be finding some of the more irregular letters that don't feature as commonly within the english language, such as Q, X, Z etc., however believe with prior planning and considered engagement with the selected environment this difficulty will be eased.

Careful consideration needs to be given when taking the images, ensuring the context of the images is   clearly evident and enhancing of the type.

Having discovered through the first year of the course that my passion within graphic design is ultimately hand crafted, luxury pieces - most typically within an editorial setting - I am excited to undertake this project as I hope to be able to tailor my concept to allow for me to take the brief in a luxury direction, however that may be.
